It wasn’t an office with a chair and a couch and warm mahogany furnishings, but it would do. There was no bowl of courtesy mints on the table, and certainly no steaming cup of Earl Grey, but that could be easily justified. There was a fluorescent light and two chairs to be occupied; there was a steel door and no windows, to maintain privacy. The room had enough square footage on it so as not to induce claustrophobia, but was compact enough that the door was within a couple meters’ reach, if escape was necessary

The faintest of grins pulls back on a scruffy man's face. This is DREW (30s). His leg bounces as he nervously looks at ROBERTA (30s), seated across from him. She also watches him, but she's still. Wary. Terrified.

DREW
Is something wrong? You're awfully quiet today.

For a second, it isn't clear if Roberta's going to laugh or cry. Instead, she just stifles a cough.

DREW (CONT'D)
We'll never get to the heart of the problem if you don't talk to me.

ROBERTA
I'm fine. Just...fine.

DREW
Fine? That isn't very definitive.

I can’t really blame the guy at the supermarket for looking at me funny when I came up to the register with a dozen two-litre bottles of Coca-Cola Classic and a jumbo box of Saran wrap at ten o’clock in the morning. I told him it was a retirement party. Rum and Coke all around. I should have just said I was stocking up for a nuclear explosion. It would have held roughly the same tinge of honesty. And now that I think about it, damn, that would have been a good line. I guess I was running a bit low on creativity though; I ran it dry earlier thinking up a way to get rid of the body.

Throughout the drive he’d kept thinking ‘At least it’s an automatic’ but it was safe to say it was the most physical exertion he’d placed on the arm in awhile – not to mention the blood loss. There was a strange colour loss in his hand that he decided he’d refuse to take notice to. A trickle of sweat ran down his neck and back.

For those who don't know, my hair was below my shoulders before. The hairdresser people at the hair school flipped when I said they were going to get to chop it all off. They made sure I got their best student.
